The Impact of Violence on Learning

Missing School

Violence can make it hard to attend school. There may be many different reasons that we can’t actually get to school to learn. For example, school may not run at all or it may be too dangerous to get there. We may have to leave our home, or home country, or keep moving. We may get suspended or asked to leave. We may be excluded in the first place, judged unable to learn, or kept out by physical or emotional barriers. We may choose to quit.

Refugee Schooling in Jordan
In many war torn countries access to education is severely limited or non existent. Facilities get demolished; funding is inadequate and everyday activities like attending school become impossible. Often, if they can, families will flee to neighbouring countries to seek refugee status. Life as a refugee can be very difficult, it is hard to find ones way in a new land, the scars of war are deep and rebuilding can be very slow. Learning and interacting with others is a way for children to escape the trauma of war a little and bring some routine and normalcy back into their lives. This slide show shows the International Rescue Committee’s efforts to address the educational needs of Iraqi refugee children in Jordan.
