Helping Yourself Learn

Acknowledging the legacy - moving from "stupid"

Over thirteen postcards, I describe my journey and the tools I used to help me along the way. Resilience became the theme as I realized thatResilience I avoid total self-destruction by constantly working at being resilient.I wrote my postcards directly to you the reader, so you might reflect on your own struggles and experiences, and might consider the ways that you can also be resilient.I thought that by including personal pictures and hand-written notes, any audience may feel empowered to deal with violence and have a more positive view of life: if I, a regular woman with similar emotions and experiences can make good choices, maintain balance and feel that my life is okay, then you, the reader, can too!

I also hope that by reading and considering what I have created, others are inspired to map out their own journeys to assist them deal with their pain. I truly believe that opening myself up, exposing the ugliness and coming to terms with my past (yet not ignoring it) will make me a more successful learner and person in future endeavours, whatever they may be. My journey is not over, but I absolutely will not forget where I have been. It’s been quite a trip.

Experiences of violence can make it hard to learn. Recognizing what we have been through and finding ways to develop our strength can help us learn more easily. This series of postcards tells of one woman’s journey and invites us all to explore our own journeys, in the hopes that we too can travel onward and develop our own resilience.
